There has been no shortage of praise for our work at UC Davis West Village Square – as the nation’s largest zero-net energy community, West Village Square’s list of green credentials is so impressive as to have made the project the recipient of more than its share of attention in the press and for awards since opening in October of 2011. The acclaim for this great project continues to build, as we at Studio E Architects are proud to announce that West Village Square has been named the winner in the Build category of the 2013 Green Dot Awards.
The Green Dot Awards recognize businesses that have exceptionally high environmental standards and meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations. Each year a jury selects a winner in seven categories, with just a single built piece of architecture chosen for recognition.
West Village Square forms the heart of UC Davis’ West Village community. Our seven buildings include 123 units of student and staff housing, ground level retail space and a large recreation center for all of the residents. Individually, the buildings at West Village Square were strategically designed to lower energy needs with the best energy-saving techniques available, while simultaneously planning for an appropriate amount of energy generation. Each building employs a super-insulated envelope and extensive sunshading devices that combine with an impressive array of electricity-generating solar photovoltaic panels to achieve the net-zero goal. Together, the buildings form the boundaries of a central Village Square that acts as an open-air “living room” where residents and visitors can interact and enjoy the community’s host of amenities.
The winners in each category will be honored at a ceremony in Los Angeles in May. For more on UC Davis West Village, click here. For more information on the Green Dot Awards, click here. Congratulations to all involved!
